We were delighted to author and/or co-author two papers at the 13th Australia New Zealand Conference on Geomechanics, held in Perth from 1st to 3rd April (Full details on the conference available here). The first paper was presented on Tuesday 2nd April by Gordon Stevens of Geofabrics New Zealand and consisted of a case study of two Keystone TW3 modular block walls reinforced with Tensar RE500 geogrids which were shaken very strongly by the Kaikoura earthquake in 2016 and survived without a scratch. The PGA at the site was probably in the order of 0.6g, so one the strongest we know about where a Tensar reinforced soil structure has been affected.

The next paper was presented on Wednesday 3rd April by Mike Dobie aimed at working platforms. The paper summarises in reasonable detail the design method in BR 470, and then describes a new design approach based on the T-value method developed by Andrew Lees. So, the target of this method is to start from the basic advice given in BR 470, and then improve it with a better method for carrying out the bearing capacity calculations which takes into account mechanical stabilisation of the platform material using Tensar TX geogrids.
